What Should You Serve at a Melbourne Cup Party?

The Melbourne Cup is coming up. And if you’re hosting a party, you’ve got to know what you’ll serve.

Because you’re not just inviting people over to watch the event. You’re inviting people to have a fun time.

And part of having fun is enjoying food and good drinks.

But the type of cuisine you’ll need depends on a lot of factors. Below, we’ll list some of those, and we’ll give you some ideas on what to serve invitees!

First Rule – Keep it Light.

You don’t want to overfeed your invitees to the point of killing of their awareness.

You’re inviting people over to watch the Melbourne Cup. And the food and drinks you serve should help with the excitement of the event.

So as a starting rule, don’t set up a comprehensive buffet.

Don’t serve and food with extremely high calories. And don’t serve food that is too satiating or oily.

Keep the food light. Salads, some biscuits, and maybe a little cake will be enough.

Also, don't serve foods that causes bloating.

But if you really want to serve yummy food, save it after watching the events. You can have a small barbeque party after knowing the results of your sweepstake.

This would be our 15 Person BBQ reccommendation

Sausages - Quality and selection of thick and thin

6 BBQ chickens local butcher

Good Sized Spagetti Bolonase

2-3 Potato bakes

Garden salad

Rocket and Parmesan salad

Pasta salad

Coleslaw

Bread/breadrolls

Chips & Dips

Selection for the Children sweets.

Soft drinks (BYO alcohol)

Home made Melbourne Cup Cake

Second Rule – Drinks.

Anything with too much alcohol should be avoided. You don’t want your guests to get too drunk.

If you’ve got regular friends coming over, a few cans of beer is enough. But if you’re inviting over a lot of people, consider some wine.

Encourage drinks of water between alcoholic beverages, one way I find enables this behaviour is adding table water with ice and disposable cups to the tables. I will done one standard, one with a hint of fresh lime, and one with chopped up lemon.

Can I Get Fast-Food?

Only if it’s a casual get-together. Or, if you have some kids coming over too!

If you’re inviting family and some kids are coming over, keep them interested. Let them order pizza to keep them happy.

And speaking of little kids, you can’t obviously serve them alcohol. So be sure to have some kind of drink set-aside for them.

Keep it cold for November. A good lemonade punch will do you well for the kids.

There’s more to a Gathering than Food…

If you’re inviting people over, you need decorations. And you need tableware.

You need to create a Melbourne Cup mood at your home. And a TV with some food and drinks isn’t enough…
