Four Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day with Your Kids

When people think of Valentine's Day, it is often associated with long-stemmed red roses, thoughtful gifts and romantic dinner dates. Sure, roses and romance are lovely, but celebrating Valentine's Day with your children can be a fun way to incorporate some family bonding time, too! Here are four fun and simple ways to celebrate Valentine's Day with your kids.

Decorate Your Home

Decorating your home can be a fun DIY experience for the whole family,  and can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. To keep things simple, why not buy a heart-shaped foam wreath and decorate it with sparkles, glitter and pink and white fabric confetti rose petals. Or you can make lovely garlands using pre-cut paper hearts strung on twine; add twinkling fairy lights for an extra-festive twist!

Decorating your home with your kids can be a fun and relaxing activity that gets children excited for Valentine's Day. If you've never decorated for Valentine's Day before, then start small. Buy a couple of Valentine's-themed decorations and start from there. Kids love decorating no matter the occasion and will soon get into the spirit of the holiday!

Make Treats!

What better way to ring in Valentine's than spending it whipping up  tasty snacks and treats in the kitchen? Homemade chocolate truffles are easy to put together and make lovely little gifts that your children can hand out to their friends or classmates. Baking heart-shaped sugar cookies, or heart-shaped red velvet cakes (for the more adventurous bakers!) can also make a fun Valentine's Day tradition, as you and your kids work together to bake and decorate your creations!

Talk About Heart Health

While February is most associated with Valentine's Day, it is also National Heart Month (with February 14th also marking National Wear Red Day). If you're not much for decorating or baking, then why not raise awareness for heart disease by wearing red? It's never too early to teach your children about heart health; make it a memorable occasion by wearing red too - get creative with costumes like the Royal Red Queen of Hearts or Little Red Riding Hood. You could also incorporate heart-friendly, cardio-based games for your kids, like a game of tag with all players in costumes.

Learn a Language!

Another unusual Valentine's Day pastime, this activity teaches your kids about the subtle nuances of other languages and could spur them on to learning more about different cultures! Teach your children how to say 'I love you' in different languages, and create a love book of 'I Love You's' in a bunch of languages! This can be an enjoyable, unique and inexpensive way to get your kids into the Valentine's Day spirit and perhaps even foster a lifelong interest in learning languages.

Celebrating Valentine's Day with your partner is awesome. Doing mushy, romantic things for your partner is amazing and if that's your thing, you should totally indulge. However, Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily have to be all about you and your partner - your kids can join in with all these fun activities, too!
